URL Display Rules and Variables
Display rules let you control exactly where and when your personalized content appears on your website. URL rules and URL variables are two powerful tools for targeting content to the right pages and the right visitors.
URL Rules
URL rules let you target content to specific pages or URL patterns on your website. Instead of showing the same content across your entire site, you can tailor what visitors see based on the page they are viewing.
URL rules are configured in the content creation or editing form under the Display Rules section.
How URL Pattern Matching Works
You can define URL patterns to match against the pages on your site. For example:
/products - Matches your main products page
/products/* - Matches any page under the /products path
/blog/summer-sale - Matches a specific blog post
/category/shoes - Matches a specific category page
This allows you to show different banners or content on different sections of your website without creating separate campaigns for each.
URL Variables
URL variables enable dynamic personalization based on query parameters in the visitor's URL. When a visitor arrives at your site with specific parameters in the URL, you can use those values to customize what they see.
How URL Variables Work
When a visitor lands on your page with query parameters, ConversionWax can read those values and display matching content. For example:
A visitor arrives at
yoursite.com?campaign=summer- Display summer-themed bannersA visitor arrives at
yoursite.com?ref=partner1- Show a welcome message for that partner's audienceA visitor arrives at
yoursite.com?promo=discount20- Display a 20% discount banner
This is especially useful for paid advertising campaigns, email marketing links, and affiliate traffic where you want the landing page experience to match the source.
Combining with Location Targeting
For even more precise personalization, you can combine URL rules and variables with location targeting. Location targeting lets you show content based on the visitor's geographic location (country, region, or city).
For example, you could create a rule that shows a specific banner only on your /products page, only for visitors from the United States, and only when they arrived via a summer campaign link. This layered approach ensures your content is as relevant as possible.
Common Use Cases
Landing page personalization - Customize the hero banner based on which ad or email brought the visitor to your site
Campaign-specific content - Show promotional banners only to visitors who clicked a campaign link
Product category banners - Display relevant upsells or promotions on specific product category pages
Partner and affiliate content - Show co-branded content for visitors arriving from partner referral links
Regional promotions - Combine URL rules with location targeting to run geo-specific campaigns on particular pages
